The Charleston is a festive dance from the Roaring Twenties, born in 1923 on the song "Charleston" by James P. Johnson (piano teacher of Fats Waller, Duke Ellington or Thelonious Monk).
If this song is based on the rhythm of the piano, as it was played at the time of ragtime, it is quickly on swing and foxtrot style brass bands that the dance developed in a wild style.
However, decades later,
mainly in the pop of the 60s, it is the out-of-tune rhythmic piano that becomes the emblem of the Charleston.

Le charleston est une danse festive des années folles, née en 1923 sur le morceau "Charleston" de James P. Johnson (professeur de piano de Fats Waller, Duke Ellington ou bien Thelonious Monk).
Si ce morceau se base sur la rythmique du piano, telle qu'elle était jouée à l'époque du ragtime, c'est rapidement sur des formations avec cuivres de style swing et foxtrot que la danse s'est développée dans un style endiablé.
Pourtant, des décennies plus tard, principalement dans la pop des années 60, c'est le piano rythmique désaccordé qui devient l'emblème du Charleston.
